  1. Last week
  2. Hamilton 16:25 Dan De Light Seventh of 10 in handicap at Leicester (5f, good to firm, 4/1) 17 days ago, slowly away. Headgear still off and others more persuasive. Brighton 15:00 Klip Klopp 9/1, fifth of 7 in handicap at Lingfield (12f, AW) 22 days ago, unsuited by step up in trip. Blinkers on 1st time. Must improve. Chepstow 20:05 Windy Cove 0-8 on the Flat in 2020 but has managed a handicap hurdle win for this yard lately. Good apprentice booked and could play a part back on the level. Stratford 19:20 Justified Fair stayer on Flat who opened his hurdles account in 7-runner handicap hurdle at Huntingdon (20.7f) 25 days ago. Ought to be competitive again despite 5 lb rise. 19:50 Cremant Runner-up 3 times off higher marks over hurdles last season and came on from his reappearance when scoring at Aintree off this mark 18 days ago. Showed an aptitude for chasing over a year ago so potentially on a good mark back in this sphere.
  3. Happy Valley 12:45 Our Creed 0-10 in Hong Kong but starting to get the hang of things in recent months; well supported when finishing fourth over C&D in his latest outing; dangerous from stall 1. 14:15 Sunny Delight A maiden after 15 starts but stayed on well for second over C&D four weeks ago and has the services of Joao Moreira again today; high on the list. 15:15 Storm Legend Safely held over 6f this month but had a wide draw that day and is much better judged on this year's consistent 7f/1m form; has slipped to a workable mark now and Joao Moreira takes the ride today; shortlisted. 15:50 Gorgeous Vitality Progressive 3yo who bids for a hat-trick after two very convincing C&D wins in recent weeks; moves up in grade today but commands respect in current mood.
  4. Southwell 13:30 Dazzling Glory Scored over hurdles at Sedgefield in October. Every chance when hampered and fell last in handicap chase at Warwick (24f, good) on her debut over fences 67 days ago. Firmly in the mix. Pontefract 15:15 Karratha EW No impact in 3 quick runs in Ireland for Ken Condon last autumn. Needs a betting check now handicapping for new yard with blinkers added. 16:45 Hulton Ranger EW 16/1, ninth of 14 in handicap at Ripon (6f, good to firm) 43 days ago. Tongue strap on 1st time. Looks set for another struggle. Windsor 20:15 Strategic Fortune 2 wins from 5 runs this year. 15/8, career best when winning 11-runner handicap at Wolverhampton (9.5f) 59 days ago, bit in hand. Has good chance on form. Musselburgh 21:00 Award Dancer Failed to win on AW in Ireland for Joseph O'Brien but struck at the first time of asking for new stable in 1m Newcastle handicap in October. Switches to turf for the first time on reappearance. Much less exposed than rest of these.
  5. Uttoxeter 16:10 Leylak Below best back from 14 months off at Ludlow (15.7f) in May but right back on track (upped in trip) when running out a convincing winner of a Warwick novice (19f) 32 days ago. Well worth a look returned to handicaps from what could prove a lenient mark. Windsor 15:15 Legendary Day Respectable third of 9 in handicap at Haydock (10.2f, good to firm, 5/1) 37 days ago. Cheekpieces on 1st time. Considered with Buick back on board. Cartmel 16:30 Liffeydale Dreamer Added to her excellent Cartmel record when winning over 25f last month. Showed enough to suggest she's still in good form when last of 3 at Aintree since. Much respected back here.
  6. Dettori and Lezoo take Memorial Empress Fillies’ Stakes victory‘I am intending to ride for the rest of this year and next year’On his first ride since taking a “sabbatical” from his relationship with John and Thady Gosden, Frankie Dettori partnered Lezoo to victory at Newmarket. It became apparent that all was not well with the Dettori and Gosden association on Thursday when the jockey’s name appeared alongside the Ralph Beckett-trained filly in the Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies’ Stakes, but not the Gosden-trained horses on the same card. 7. Newcastle 13:15 The Nu Form Way Improved to win a pair of handicaps on soft ground in October. Off 7 months, 7/4, fifth of 8 in handicap at Haydock (10.2f, good) 16 days ago. Back up in trip. Makes AW debut. 17:13 Vulcan Won twice in 2020. Second of 9 in handicap at Haydock (10.2f, good to firm, 17/2) 36 days ago, travelling well and clear of rest. Makes tapeta debut. One to consider. Curragh 17:25 Bay Of Bengal Promising type. 1 win from 2 runs this year. Winner at Gowran in April. Second of 14 in handicap at Gowran (9.4f, good to soft, 5/1) 19 days ago. Has to be taken seriously. Chester 14:30 Australian Harbour Continued theme of race-by-race progress when second on 1¼m Nottingham handicap debut in May. Bit disappointing over 9.1f at Yarmouth but could easily get back on the up trying a new trip. Lingfield 18:15 Power Generation Well-supported when sixth of 8 in handicap (9/4) at Brighton (7f, good) 25 days ago, badly hampered over 4f out. Makes polytrack debut. Blinkers on 1st time. Can make amends with his yard going well. Doncaster 20:00 Tammani Ended losing run when racing solo on the far side at Redcar last week but the fact he won so easily suggests he had a big positional advantage. Opposable up 7 lb.
  8. Sha Tin 06:30 Brave Dreams Flopped badly over 7f last time but his earlier 6f form was very encouraging. 09:05 Intrepid Winner 0-8 in HK but has run well each time he has tackled this C&D; worth considering. 10:10 Buzzinga 2-4; remains unexposed although today's stronger opposition will make things much tougher. 10:45 Voyage Bubble Improving sort returning from break & trying an extra furlong; merits close consideration.
  9. Cartmel 16:15 Larry Looby Finally off the mark under Rules when seeing off the reopposing Good Man Vinnie by 17 lengths at Hexham 13 days ago. Raised 11 lb but contender if in a similar mood this afternoon. 16:47 Malina Ocarina Modest hurdler who arrives on the back of a creditable second (returning from an absence) over C&D 23 days ago, albeit no match for the winner that day. Should be thereabouts. Curragh 20:28 Monty's Way Career best when winning 11-runner handicap at Killarney (16.8f, soft, 10/1) 38 days ago, better placed than most. 8 lb higher now but yard having good spell and likely to continue in form. Newmarket 17:50 Albion Princess Kingman filly. Dam 9f-1¾m winner, half-sister to smart winner up to 1m (stayed 1¼m) Fly At Dawn. Definite promise in 2 of her 3 starts in backend novice/maiden events at 1m and she's well worth a look now handicapping on return with Buick in the plate. Chester 18:50 Cashew EW Stepped up on reappearance when third of 5 in handicap at Leicester (7f, good to soft, 9/1) 24 days ago but will need more again in this deeper race.
  10. Stable not using jockey at Newmarket on SaturdayDettori was severely criticised by trainer at Royal AscotJohn and Thady Gosden will not be using Frankie Dettori at Newmarket on Saturday, amid rumours of a split after a dreadful week at Royal Ascot for the jockey. Hollie Doyle, who rode her first Classic winner when successful on the Gosden-trained Nashwa on Sunday, is favourite to take over at the yard. There has been no official comment from the trainers or the rider but Dettori’s manager, Peter Burrell, said: “We’re in the dark and searching for answers like everybody else.” He told the Racing Post: “Frankie rang up the Gosden office this morning to discuss riding plans for the weekend, as he usually does, but didn’t get a call back. We know absolutely nothing, so we’ll have to put the jigsaw together ourselves. Whatever John and Thady have done, we’ll all have to move on with.” Continue reading...
  11. Newmarket 16:20 Roxzoff Has already enjoyed an excellent 2022, improving further when overcoming the rise in class in 13-runner handicap at Sandown last month, his fourth win of the year. Did very little wrong when runner-up from this mark at Doncaster so remains of serious interest.
  12. Earlier
  13. Worcester 13:35 Texard Winning hurdler when with Gordon Elliott in 2020. Successful 4 times over fences subsequently, including in claimer at Auteuil on sole outing for E. Lyon in October. Similar form when third of 4 at Aintree on debut for this yard 12 days ago, let down by his jumping a touch. Carlisle 15:25 My Little Queens EW Off 8 months, career best when winning 7-runner handicap at Wetherby (10f, good, 11/2) 15 days ago, bit in hand. This is tougher but she is progressive and could go well if staying the longer trip. 15:55 Miss Carol Ann Knew her job when making the ideal start to her career in a 7f maiden at Newmarket in September. However, pulled too hard both starts since, including in Fred Darling at Newbury on return. Remains with potential but needs to settle down. Salisbury 15:15 Rousay AW novice winner in October. Good third of 11 in handicap at Goodwood (8f, good to soft, 20/1) 33 days ago and there might be more to come.
  14. Happy Valley 11:45 Prime Star 0-16 now but has been running pretty well since dropped into Class 5 company; can go well. 12:45 Nextmodel Not beaten far in four defeats this season; may prove to be the fly in the ointment.
  15. Beverley 14:45 Millionaire Waltz EW Five wins from 17 Flat runs. Didn't need to improve to win 5-runner handicap (7/4) at Newcastle (8f) 112 days ago. Turf form not as good and chance he'll come on for this. 15:15 Myristica Career best in refitted headgear when winning 6-runner handicap at Ripon (9.8f, good to firm) 6 days ago, driven out. Carries 5 lb penalty but has to be on the shortlist. Brighton 14:00 Mellencamp Lightly-raced maiden. 14/1, good third of 9 in handicap at Kempton (6f) when last seen in October, caught further back than ideal. Moving up in trip here should be in his favour and he needs considering. Newton Abbot 17:10 Mascat Useful Flat performer and perfect start over hurdles when landing a Wincanton maiden in October. Below par on handicap debut in this sphere in January, but subsequently placed twice on the level and he's a big player here. Sligo 17:35 Gamigin Fair gelding. Course winner. Bit below form fifth of 13 in handicap at Gowran (9.6f, good, 10/1) 75 days ago. Should be back on his game returned to a more suitable distance. Newbury 19:40 Flag High 10/3, best effort when fourth of 11 in handicap at Goodwood (7f) 18 days ago, despite racing very freely. Remains with potential.
  16. A worst return at the Royal meeting since 2013 drew criticism from John Gosden and playful talk of a changing of the guard The Queen did not attend Royal Ascot last week, for the first time since her coronation 70 years ago, but 273,465 spectators did and though they had to make do without the track’s owner leading the daily procession, most will have headed home with overwhelmingly positive memories of the first Royal meeting with a proper crowd since 2019. The weather played a blinder, of course, with only the final hour or so on Saturday seeing any need for spectators to retreat from the lawns and take shelter in the stand. The track was also immaculate, with safe, watered good-to-firm ground providing an ideal surface for top-class racehorses to strut their stuff, and the post-Covid, seven races-a-day format helped to ensure that every afternoon had at least one moment to keep racegoers coming back for more. 17. Ballinrobe 18:45 Satono Chevalier Bit below form 7¼ lengths fifth of 12 to Church Mountain in handicap (11/2) at Limerick (8f, good to firm) 9 days ago. Merits consideration. Windsor 20:10 Cabeza De Llave Lightly-raced maiden. Fourth of 7 in handicap at Chelmsford City (6f, 15/2) 18 days ago, left poorly placed out wide. Makes turf debut. A strongly-run 5f should play to his strengths.
  18. Worcester 14:00 Al Roc This veteran has been in really good form in recent weeks, making it 3 wins in his last 4 starts when forging 12 lengths clear at Uttoxeter 10 days ago. Raised another 6 lb but he merits plenty of respect in his current mood. Pontefract 16:15 Love Is Golden Useful sort who benefited from a drop in grade when second at Chester 8 days ago. Should remain competitive.
  19. Sha Tin 07:00 Regent Glory Best effort when third over C&D latest; more to come but has been handed a difficult draw. 07:30 Beauty Spirit Now 1lb below the mark from which he won over C&D in November; well drawn; considered.
  20. Newmarket 15:17 Bague D'or Course winner who resumed with good second of 5 in handicap at Newmarket (12f) 37 days ago. Well worth considering with this step up in trip also a plus. Redcar 16:02 Beauzon Got back on the up when winning 9-runner handicap at Lingfield (6f, AW, 5/1), helped by being held up in strongly-run race. Off 166 days. Perth 16:07 Hereditary Rule Promisng chaser who followed up his Clonmel maiden success in 6-runner handicap at Ayr (24.1f, good) 46 days ago by 2¼ lengths from Exit To Where, always holding on. More to come and can complete the hat-trick. Down Royal 16:25 Shajak Thrice-raced winner. 2/1, won 10-runner maiden at Tipperary (12.5f, good to firm) 18 days ago, responding well. Yard having good spell. Makes handicap debut and not dismissed with more to come.
  21. Top-notch Australian sprinter Home Affairs may not have it his own way in Saturday’s big race – the Platinum Jubilee stakes Royal Ascot’s first £1m race on Wednesday attracted just five runners but the second – Saturday’s Platinum Jubilee Stakes – has drawn a record field of 27, headed by the top-notch Australian sprinter, Home Affairs. Home Affairs is a stable companion of Nature Strip, Tuesday’s impressive King’s Stand Stakes winner, and beat him by a short-head over five furlongs at Flemington in February. Continue reading...
  22. Redcar 14:55 Trais Fluors Hasn't found winning easy in recent years but eased in weights and shaped as if in good form despite finishing tenth in the Thirsk Hunt Cup, meeting trouble and finishing with running left. One to bear in mind from this mark. Goodwood 18:35 Red Flyer 3 wins from 5 runs this year. Career best when winning 5-runner handicap (15/2) at Newmarket (12f, good) 36 days ago, driven out. Assessor applies a little more pressure but he's respected nevertheless in present groove. Limerick 20:30 Waterville Thrice-raced maiden. Below-par third of 9 in maiden (10/11) at the Curragh (10f, good to soft) 28 days ago. Makes handicap debut and needs to get back on track.
  23. Recent win over track and trip makes him pick of the prices in a renewal with several major contenders on show The Commonwealth Cup was added to the Royal Ascot programme seven years ago but it is already among the most eagerly anticipated Group Ones at the meeting and Friday’s running is deeper and more competitive than ever. Perfect Power, who did not get home in the 2,000 Guineas but still finished seventh of 15, is the likely favourite, while the first four home in last month’s Sandy Lane at Haydock are also in the mix. Slipstream, trained in the US by Christophe Clement, is another interesting contender. Continue reading...
  24. Aidan O’Brien’s four-year-old lacks experience but appears ready to take this step up to Group One company in his stride The hot, dry weather at Royal Ascot this week has been ideal for Stradivarius ahead of his latest attempt to win a record-equalling fourth Gold Cup, not least because fast ground seems likely to rule out Trueshan, one of his most significant rivals. John Gosden’s popular stayer came up short against a younger rival last year, however, and may do so again on Thursday, when Kyprios (4.20) looks likely to give Aidan O’Brien his eighth success in the meeting’s showpiece event. Continue reading...
  25. Ascot 16:20 Mother Earth Last year's 1000 Guineas winner who resumed with comfortable victory in Park Express Stakes at the Curragh. Folded tamely in the Lockinge at Newbury last time but, given her overall profile, she's likely to bounce back.
  26. Form of Sir Michael Stoute colt looks impressive enough to deliver the spoils in his first Group One race Just five runners go to post for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on Wednesday, the first £1m race at the meeting, and while that might seem a poor return for a seven-figure investment, all five have a live chance on the pick of their form. It is an international field, too, with Shahryar, the Sheema Classic winner on World Cup night in Dubai, attempting to become the first Japanese-trained winner at the Royal meeting, while Joseph O’Brien sends State Of Rest from Ireland, hoping to add a win as a trainer after having taken this race as a jockey aboard So You Think in 2012. Continue reading...
  27. Thirsk 17:15 Lost My Sock Latest win at Ripon in May. Creditable fifth of 11 in handicap (14/1) at Musselburgh (5f, good to firm) 9 days ago, slowly away. Looks vulnerable for win purposes here.
