Chaldean delivers glory for retiring Frankie Dettori in his last 2,000 Guineas

Frankie Dettori opened the British leg of his farewell tour with a fourth win in the 2,000 Guineas on Chaldean, powering one-and-three-quarter lengths clear of the rank outsider Hi Royal at the line with Royal Scotsman, who was just a head behind Chaldean in the Dewhurst Stakes last October, another half-length back in third.

Chaldean, trained by Andrew Balding, attracted steady support in the hours before the race as persistent rain turned the going to soft, and he set off as the 7-2 second-favourite behind Auguste Rodin, at 13-8.
